Constructing an automated reasoning program then consists in giving procedural form to a formal theory (a set of axioms which are primitive rules defined in a declarative form) so that it can be exploited on a computer to produce theorems (valid formulas). The recent improvements in computational power and the efforts made to carefully evaluate and compare the algorithms performances (using complexity theory) have considerably improved the techniques used in this field. Nowadays, automated reasoning is used by researchers to solve open questions in mathematics, and by industry to solve engineering problems.
Examples of common-sense reasoning include implicit reasoning about how people think or general knowledge of day-to-day events, objects, and living creatures. The simplest approach for an expert system knowledge base is simply a collection or network of production rules. For example, OPS5, CLIPS and their successors Jess and Drools operate in this fashion. Because machine learning algorithms can be retrained on new data, and will revise their parameters based on that new data, they are better at encoding tentative knowledge that can be retracted later if necessary; i.e. if they need to learn something new, like when data is non-stationary. The two biggest flaws of deep learning are its lack of model interpretability (i.e. why did my model make that prediction?) and the large amount of data that deep neural networks require in order to learn.

To test the equality of two expressions, instead of designing specific algorithms, it is usual to put expressions in some canonical form or to put their difference in a normal form, and to test the syntactic equality of the result. This implementation is very experimental, and conceptually does not fully integrate the way we intend it, since the embeddings of CLIP and GPT-3 are not aligned (embeddings of the same word are not identical for both models). For example, one could learn linear projections from one embedding space to the other. Additionally, the API performs dynamic casting when data types are combined with a Symbol object. If an overloaded operation of the Symbol class is employed, the Symbol class can automatically cast the second object to a Symbol.

For example, they require very large datasets to work effectively, entailing that they are slow to learn even when such datasets are available. Even programs may be considered and represented as expressions with operator “procedure” and, at least, two operands, the list of parameters and the body, which is itself an expression with “body” as an operator and a sequence of instructions as operands.
